Shekinah Tahi Thornless Black Raspberry is a groundbreaking black raspberry variety and the first completely spineless selection of its kind. Bred by Shekinah Berry in Auckland, New Zealand, this innovative plant combines the vigorous growth and upright habit of traditional black raspberries with the ease and comfort of thornless harvesting. “Tahi,” meaning Number One in Māori, reflects its status as a true first in berry breeding. Shekinah Tahi produces deep black, medium-firm berries with rich flavor, making it ideal for fresh eating, jams, jellies, and desserts. Its garden-friendly nature makes it an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced growers.

Growing Information

🌱 Plant Type: Black raspberry (summer-bearing / floricane) – plant plug
🌱 Hardiness Zones: 5–8
🌱 When to Plant: Spring, once risk of hard frost has passed
🌱 When to Harvest: Early to mid-summer (similar timing to Jewel black raspberry)

Cultivation Tips

Soil requirements: Plant in well-drained, fertile soil rich in organic matter. Avoid low spots where water may pool.
Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade. Full sun encourages stronger growth and higher fruit quality.
Watering: Water consistently, especially during establishment and dry periods. Soil should remain moist but not soggy. Mulching helps retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Harvesting: Berries are ready when fully black and release easily from the plant. Harvest every few days during peak season.
Pruning: Fruit is produced on second-year canes. After harvest, remove spent floricanes at ground level. Thin first-year canes in late winter to maintain airflow and manage plant size.
Growth habit: More upright and vigorous than traditional spiny black raspberries, making training and maintenance easier.
Pollination: Self-fertile—no separate pollinator required.
