Illinois Everbearing Mulberry (Morus spp.) is a hardy, productive fruit tree known for its long harvest window and sweet, blackberry-like fruit. This variety is a favorite among homesteaders because it produces over several weeks instead of all at once. The berries ripen from red to deep purple-black and are excellent fresh, frozen, or preserved. Illinois Everbearing is also prized for its cold hardiness and reliability, even in less-than-perfect growing conditions.
Plants start shipping in spring after danger of freezing and will come in robust 2" plugs.
Why Grow Illinois Everbearing Mulberry?
Extended Harvest Season
Fruits ripen gradually over several weeks, so you can harvest a little at a time instead of being overwhelmed all at once.

Cold-hardy, heat-tolerant, and adaptable to many soil types—great for low-input homesteads.
Versatile, Sweet Fruit
Juicy berries with a rich, mild sweetness that work well for fresh eating, jams, pies, syrups, and wine.

Cultivation Tips
- Soil requirements: Adaptable to a wide range of soils, but prefers well-drained soil. Tolerates sandy, loamy, and even clay soils once established.
- Sunlight: Full sun is best (6–8+ hours per day) for maximum fruit production, though it will tolerate light shade.
- Watering: Water regularly during the first year to establish strong roots. Once established, trees are fairly drought tolerant, though consistent moisture improves fruit size and yield.
- Harvesting: Berries ripen over time and are best picked when fully dark and soft. They will look like extra large, long blackberries. Laying a sheet or tarp under the tree and gently shaking branches makes harvest easy.
Illinois Everbearing is self-fertile, so you only need one tree to get fruit. Mulberries are fast growers and can be kept smaller with regular pruning, making them suitable for backyard and homestead settings.
