Black Turtle Bush Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris 'Black Turtle') are a classic and versatile variety of beans that have been cherished by gardeners and cooks for generations. Known for their rich, earthy flavor and dark, glossy appearance, these beans are a delightful addition to any garden and a staple ingredient in many culinary creations.
Characteristics
Black Turtle Bush Beans are distinguished by several key characteristics that make them popular among home gardeners and farmers:
Bean Color: As the name suggests, these beans are a glossy, jet-black color when mature. The deep hue adds an appealing visual contrast to garden beds and culinary dishes.
Bush Growth Habit: Black Turtle Bush Beans are compact and bushy in their growth habit, making them suitable for small gardens, containers, and raised beds. They do not require support structures like trellises.
Flavor and Texture: These beans are known for their rich, earthy flavor and tender texture. When cooked, they have a creamy interior that pairs well with various seasonings and ingredients.
Nutritional Benefits: Black Turtle Bush Beans are a nutritious addition to your diet, providing a good source of dietary fiber, protein, vitamins, and minerals. They are particularly rich in folate, iron, and potassium.
Growing Requirements
Cultivating Black Turtle Bush Beans is a straightforward process, and they are an excellent choice for gardeners of all levels of experience. Here are key considerations for successful growth:
Soil: Plant Black Turtle Bush Beans in well-draining, fertile soil with a pH level between 6.0 and 6.8. Amending the soil with compost or organic matter can enhance the bean's growth.
Sunlight: Ensure that your beans receive full sun exposure, preferably at least 6-8 hours of sunlight per day, to promote healthy growth and maximize yields.
Planting: Sow the seeds directly into the garden bed or container after the danger of frost has passed in your region. Plant the seeds about 1-2 inches deep and space them 2-4 inches apart in rows or blocks.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but avoid waterlogging. Beans require regular, even watering, especially during dry spells.
Mulching: Applying a layer of organic mulch around the plants helps conserve soil moisture, suppress weed growth, and maintain even soil temperatures.
Harvesting: Black Turtle Bush Beans are typically ready for harvest 60-70 days after planting. Harvest the pods when they are still tender and before the beans inside become too mature and tough.
Culinary Uses
Black Turtle Bush Beans are renowned for their versatility in the kitchen. Here are some culinary ideas to explore:
Steaming and Boiling: Steam or boil the beans until they are tender, then serve them as a nutritious side dish. Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper for added flavor.
Bean Salads: Incorporate cooked and cooled Black Turtle Bush Beans into salads for added texture and flavor. Combine them with fresh vegetables, herbs, and vinaigrette for a refreshing dish.
Soups and Stews: These beans add heartiness and flavor to soups, stews, and chili recipes. They absorb the flavors of the broth or sauce they are cooked in, enhancing the overall dish.
Sautéing: Quickly sauté the beans with garlic, onions, and your favorite spices for a flavorful side dish or a tasty addition to pasta and rice dishes.
Freezing: If you have a surplus of beans, blanch them briefly and freeze them for later use in your favorite recipes.

There are very few products out there that you buy once and it will keep on serving you. These can be reused year after year instead of ending up in the garbage can or landfill, so good for you and good for the environment. You pay a little more, but you save over time. I am absolutely sold on Bootstrap products.
What I like about the kit is that the plastic trays and dome are made of a very sturdy material, not like the flimsy trays I have used in the past. It was difficult to move full trays when they were not rigid. These trays are quite rigid and I think will make moving them much easier. They also seem like they will hold up longer with normal usage.
It was convenient to get everything I needed for a small seed starting in one package and I didn't have to search around for all the parts. It has the mesh bottom insert that seems to be necessary for use with soil blocking, so that was a big plus to me.
I am going to try the soil blocking, so I'm excited to try the blocker. Just getting everything set up now. However, the blocker seems to be in good working order even though I haven't actually used it yet.
One thing I think would improve the website is mentioning in the item description that the plastic is much sturdier than ones mostly seen in the stores. I wasn't quite sure that it was the sturdier version, but I decided to take a chance. Just making that clearer in the description would have been helpful. (i.e. "these trays and domes aren't the flimsy version you find in most stores!") I am sure people more used to using greenhouse products know that, but people new to that might not.
