Kennebec is the classic “all-purpose” potato. It makes thin, crispy chips straight from the garden to fryer, fluffy baked potatoes, light mashed potatoes, and golden french fries. Its high starch content and balanced flavor have made it a longtime favorite of commercial chip processors (it was once the #1 chipping variety in the eastern U.S.).
History:
- Origin: Developed by the USDA and Maine Agricultural Experiment Station in Presque Isle, Maine
- Breeding: Released in 1948 from a cross between Chippewa and Katahdin
- Introduction: Named after Maine’s Kennebec River, it quickly became the dominant variety in the Northeast and Midwest for fresh market, chipping, and processing due to its reliability and storability
With decades of proven performance, outstanding yields, and versatility in the kitchen, Kennebec remains a top choice for growers who want a variety they can count on year after year.
